I’m told that Meat Liquor do the naughtiest of burgers
with all the trimmings, so after months of wanting to go my boyfriend and I finally decided to take the plunge and
ventur down. I’ve heard that it gets extremely busy any time after 6 pm and as
you can’t book (like every place in London) you’re left with a minimum of around
30 mins queuing time. To avoid this we
decided to head down straight after work and arrived at around 5.45 managing to
slip right in without any waiting around.
The restaurant
is dimly lit, with animal portraits all over the walls, filament lights hanging
above tables and a bit of fake blood splattered on the glass for good measure.
This is no place for veggies.
It had a very southern American feel to it, from
the wooden floors, the waiters with their cowbow saddlebags and the rock ‘n’ roll music. I
loved it.
We started
by ordering some cocktails, the best way to start the week. I really wanted to
try the Louisiana Jam cocktail but apparently they were out of jam (?) so I joined T
with a Space ‘n’ Smash, a delicious mix of gin and elderflower, a new
favourite.
Then we got
down to the real reason we were there, the meat. There’s an impressive selection
of beef burgers to choose from ranging from the original cheese burgers to one
loaded with chillies, mushrooms and jalapenos. And if you don’t fancy beef then
you can always have a fried chicken burger or chicken wings smothered in their
house sauce.
T opted for
the Mushroom Swiss and I went for the Cheeseburger. For sides we had a
selection of Cheese and Fries, Phili Cheese Fries and Southern Style Slaw. This
is probably the unhealthiest meal we’ve eaten in a while, but it was so worth
it. The burgers were cooked to perfection with the right amount of relish and sauce and
the chips were smothered in cheese.
After
stuffing ourselves silly we planned to venture elsewhere for some more
drinks, but as the atmosphere was so good we decided to stay a little longer for a bottle of
red.
If you
haven’t already been to Meat Liquor I couldn’t recommend it enough, the food,
service, drinks and atmosphere were all amazing. I would suggest trying to
either go mid-week or before 6pm as weekends and after 6pm are crazy busy so
expect a wait, but it’s so worth it.
